Bake your own loaf of bread, learn about baking traditions. Enjoy a picnic in the vineyards or wine cellar of the oldest wine farm in the district while sampling the local wines.
As the Overberg is the bread basket of South Africa, naturally there is a long tradition of bread baking in the region. On this tour, you will enjoy baking in Botrivier, overlooking the wheatfields, with a baker who does it the old fashioned way.
Pine Pienaar will teach you about the history of bread baking. But then it is time to get your hands dirty, baking your own loaf of bread. The lesson includes learning how to knead the dough, handle the risen loaf and how to bake the bread. The resultant loaf is yeasty, light and crispy and full of holes. So delicious! With your fresh loaf under your arm, you will go down the hill to family owned Beaumont Wines for a wine tasting and picnic at the picturesque farm dam or lunch in the wine cellar. Beaumont Wines is the oldest wine farm in the district and is home to a watermill which is over 200 years old. The mill has been restored to full working order and produces limited amounts of flour.
